The Two Goats

When she-goats finish grazing, friskiness ensues, and seeking pastureland they go beyond the beaten paths of humankind. No landscape so much pleases them as that where steep, imposing crags and beetling cliffs abound; they love to climb and frolic there.

One day two goats thus freed themselves from each her own enclosure in the meadowed vales and set out for adventure midst the hills.

They met on either side of a ravine that had for bridge a single narrow plank. Two weasels even would have found it hard to pass contrariwise; besides, the stream below was deep and fast and loud and made these gamesome ladies tremble.

Nonetheless, despite the danger, step by step they each began to cross, and soon stood nose to nose, refusing resolutely to give way. They both were proud, and proud their pedigrees.

So, neither yielding, down both overtumbled.

A stubborn arrogance is often humbled.
